The most memorable TV moments of 2009
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As part of OK!’s Year in Review, we have recapped some of the most memorbable TV moments of 2009. Ranging from the Inauguration of President Barack Obama to Jim and Pam’s wedding on The Office to David Letterman admitting an affair and his public apology, these top TV clips are worth revisiting.

    President Barack Hussein Obama
was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States of America on Jan. 20. Our first African-American head of state delivered a historical Inaugural address in front of an estimated crowd of four million people in Washington. Celebrities who watched Obama’s address include long time supporters Oprah Winfrey, P. Diddy, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Tatiana Ali, Billy Baldwin, Chris Tucker, Spike Lee, Jessica Alba and her husband Cash Warren were among the slew of celebrity performances and appearances. Aretha Franklin belted out a moving rendition of the National Anthem, wearing the infamous bow hat.

Almost as exciting as Obama’s address was First Lady Michelle Obama’s choice of outfit. Michelle wore a sparkling, mustard-yellow suit and coat by Isabel Toldeo, while First Daughters Malia and Sasha, took pictures with their digital camera to document Daddy’s big day.

Taylor Lautner spends time in 'Cancun'

Summit is staying in the Taylor Lautner game.

As the days tick down to the town closing for the holidays, the company has picked up "Cancun," an action spec by Eric Champnella and Grant Thompson.

The project is acting as starring vehicle for Lautner and is the first project from the newly established production shingle he shares with his dad, Dan Lautner.

Dan Lautner is in discussion to produce the movie with Temple Hill's Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, who forged a relationship with the actor whom they worked on Summit's "Twilight Sage: New Moon."

The story follows an out-of-place college kid who travels with a girl to Cancun on a break. While there, the girl and her friends are taken hostage by a drug cartel and he is forced to save them. The story is designed to take advantage of Lautner's martial arts skills, which he showed off when he hosted "Saturday Night Live" this past weekend.

Summit's president of production Erik Feig and director of development Gillian Bohrer will oversee the project for the studio.

Champnella, repped by ICM, Mosaic and attorney Dave Feldman, co-wrote Disney's "Mr. 3000" and worked on Warners' DC Comics project "Metal Men." Thompson, also repped by ICM, is an actor-turned-writer; this is his first sale.

Lautner is repped by WME and Management 360.

    2009 in Photos
This is a really cool collection of photos that have been chosen to represent 2009.

I hope this wasn't already posted; it was a pain in the ass. I looked around and I didn't see it, but I'm in a daze from finals week so it's very possible that I'm an idiot and I missed it. ANYWAY, which photos are your favorites? Which ones are missing? They're less hilarious than the ones in the best celeb pictures list, but I love some of these a lot.

Online posting of women's abortion information challenged in Oklahoma
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

(CNN) -- A judge could determine Friday whether to allow an Oklahoma law to go forward that will post information online about women who get abortions in the state -- an act critics say would be harassment and an invasion of privacy.

"We don't feel that the government should be able to run a grand inquisition into women's private lives," says Jennifer Mondino, an attorney challenging the law on behalf of the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights.

State Sen. Todd Lamb helped draft the abortion legislation and describes it as "a common sense measure with bipartisan support." He says the left has tried to skew the law's intent through a campaign of misinformation.
"We're not trying to embarrass anybody, hurt anybody or make anybody's identities known. That's not the purpose of the legislation," the Republican lawmaker says.

WTF Was That? The Craziest Fashion Moments of 2009
Honorable Mention: The September Issue release; Anna Wintour's Anna'ness. Catapulting from behind the scenes into the utmost of spotlights this year, largely due to the release of The September Issue, Anna Wintour seems to enjoy leaving quiet little insults in her wake. She casually referred to Minnesota's population as "little houses" during her 60 Minutes interview (ouch!), and then cheerfully suggested the cinematographer of her own documentary might want to "go to the gym" when his tummy showed up in a photo. Damn! And you thought those Tributes hurt!

    10. Gaultier's Super Model Runway Tackle. Perhaps the most light-hearted item on our list, Jean-Paul Gaultier proved with zeal that fashion doesn't always need to be straight faces and bob-cuts. He went careening down the runway like a lunatic at his fall '09 show toward 51-year-old former French supermodel Ines de la Fressange, nearly wrestling her to the ground in a moment of... well, we can't even imagine what he was feeling. But it sure did look fun, if not totally crazy.

Beautiful Chocolate Man Lands Lead in New J.J. Abrams Pilot

Boris Kodjoe ("Soul Food," "Surrogates") has scored the lead role in J.J. Abrams upcoming NBC pilot "Undercovers."

"Undercovers," described as a mix between "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and "The Bourne Identity," revolves around spouses Samantha and Steven (Kodjoe) Bloom, who work together as spies. The pilot was the subject of a bidding war between the major networks, with NBC coming out victorious.

Kodjoe joins the already-cast Gerald McRaney ("Major Dad") in the pilot. McRaney will portray the couple's CIA boss. The role of Samantha has yet to be cast.

Abrams, whose TV credits include "Alias" and "Lost," is considering directing the Warner Bros. TV-produced pilot, which he co-wrote with Josh Reims.

I think it's awesome that they went with Boris for the lead. Casting an African-American actor as the lead in a high profile project like this is pretty much unheard of. Can't wait to see who they cast as the wife. Any suggestions, ONTD? And make sure it's someone who equals Boris' hotness.

Roman Polanski extradition delayed until next year, Swiss officials say
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Swiss government won't begin the extradition process of director Roman Polanski until sometime next year, officials said today.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office wants to bring the famed director back to California for sentencing in a three-decade-old child sex case. Polanski admitted to having sex with a 13-year-old girl at the home of Jack Nicholson but fled to Europe before sentencing.

He was arrested in Zurich three months ago -- but it remains unclear exactly when the extradition process will begin.

"There will be nothing more this year. At the earliest, we'll make an announcement early next year as to whether the criteria for extradition have been met," Folco Galli, a spokesman for the Justice Ministry, told ABC News.

Polanski has vowed to fight extradition, and legal experts say it could be a long process. He spent three months in a Zurich prison before being granted bail. He now is living under house arrest at his upscale Alpine chalet.

Swiss officials have said Polanski could face up to two years in prison if brought back to the U.S.

Police: Auschwitz 'Arbeit Macht Frei' sign stolen
Police: Auschwitz 'Arbeit Macht Frei' sign stolen

WARSAW, Poland – The infamous iron sign bearing the Nazis' cynical slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" that spanned the main entrance to the former Auschwitz death camp was stolen before dawn Friday, Polish police said.

The sign — with the German words for "Work Sets You Free" — is believed to have been stolen from the gates of the Auschwitz memorial between 3:30 a.m. and 5 a.m., when museum guards noticed it was missing and alerted authorities, police spokeswoman Katarzyna Padlo said.

The wide iron sign — across a gate at the main entrance to the former Nazi death camp in southern Poland where more than 1 million people died during World War II — was removed by being unscrewed on one side and pulled off on the other, Padlo said.

Police have launched an intensive hunt, with criminal investigators and search dogs sent to the grounds of the vast former death camp )

    A Fish Oil Story

    By PAUL GREENBERG
    Published: December 15, 2009

“WHAT’S the deal with fish oil?”

Food is an important idiom, but in today's day and age, so is sustainability.

Fish-oil...you know it you love 'em! Omega-3 Fatty Acids!

And where do an alarming portion of the nation's come from?

The Atlantic ecosystem dependent, foundation of the structure, algae eating...Menhaden.

Mr. Greenberg goes on to a point where legislation would have to be put into effect- as something should be done to protect the nurseries for a fish all our favorite homegrown fishes depend on for their omega-3 payload...

Part of the battle is in a few allowed to continue plunder in federal waters and unsustainable business practice (in meeting the demand). More long-term sources are listed in the article, such as the rather popular supplement "flax seed oil."

Still, I want to know how this effects my bowl of noodles, and if I should be adjusting my dietary habits/consumer choice to be more in line with my personal principles (and also perhaps my political beliefs).

But, don't mind me, Mr. Greenberg says it best:

For fish guys like me, this egregious privatization of what is essentially a public resource is shocking. But even if you are not interested in fish, there is an important reason for concern about menhaden’s decline.

Quite simply, menhaden keep the water clean. The muddy brown color of the Long Island Sound and the growing dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay are the direct result of inadequate water filtration — a job that was once carried out by menhaden. An adult menhaden can rid four to six gallons of water of algae in a minute. Imagine then the water-cleaning capacity of the half-billion menhaden we “reduce” into oil every year.

This conclusion of Mr. Greenberg's Op-Ed is what reinvigorates in me a naturalist sense of liberalism. As "The Law" (after Bastiat) should exist to prevent plunder and federal waters, pur nation's valuable natural resource should be protected by our government. THAT is the business of a nation. To ensure the survival of its people and its resources so that it may have its wealth maintained for future generations. (Real wealth, not creative number moving).

    Tiger mistress roundup

Our heads are spinning (make it stop!) trying to keep track of all the other women in Tiger Woods' life. Since he has only confirmed "infidelities" and not specific persons, all we have to go on is what's been flung around the tabloids in the past month. Let's start with the newest after the jump.

    Phelps expresses sympathy for Woods

Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps expressed sympathy on Thursday for the plight of fellow American Tiger Woods and said he fully understood what it was like to make mistakes.

World number one Woods has taken an indefinite break from golf after admitting he had been unfaithful to his wife.

Phelps, speaking on the eve of a two-day meeting between the United States and a European team, said: "He (Woods) is going through a hard time right now.

"It can't be easy but I just wish him the best for himself and his family," the swimmer told a news conference at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

The 24-year-old American, who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics last year, was forced to apologise early this year after being photographed inhaling from a pipe used to smoke marijuana. No charges were laid.

"I'd be the first to admit I've made a lot of mistakes both in and out of the pool," said Phelps.

"But of the mistakes I've made I've never made the same mistake again. I've become a much stronger person and I've helped other people not make the same mistakes."

Screenwriter Dan O’Bannon Dead at 63

A legendary screenwriter of science fiction and horror, Dan O’Bannon, best known for writing Alien, passed away today at the age of 63. Bannon broke out back in 1974 with the lo-budget sci-fi flick Dark Star, which was director John Carpenter’s first major film. O’Bannon not only wrote the script for Dark Star, he also edited, art designed, acted in, and handled the special effects on the film.

Then he wrote Alien, which would be his biggest film both critically and commercially. But oddly enough, O’Bannon’s most ardent fans, while they unabashedly love Alien, seem to support the guy more for his smaller cult movies like Dark Star, Dead & Buried, Blue Thunder, his segment “B-17″ in Heavy Metal, and for The Return of the Living Dead, a film he also directed.

Trans Activist Calls for Boycott of Avatar
    Source: The Advocate

A Website attempting to stop the release of James Cameron’s Avatar argues that the film is offensive because in the future, human beings will evolve and transition to transgenderism.

“Heterosexual arrogance, assumptions or exclusions of alternative sexualities in movies is no longer acceptable,” reads the site StopAvatarMovie.Blogspot.com. “Diversity and tolerance are human rights.”

The website is sprinkled with arguments suggesting that given the current course of evolution, it would be far more likely for the film’s hero, Jake, to be gay, bi, or trans than it would for him to be straight.

“The film also makes a gross assumption that the old hetrosexual ways on Earth would somehow be occurring with another race of being on a totally different world with its own unique culture.”

The boycott calls on people to sand outside theatres with pamphlets upon Avatar’s release on Friday. It also suggests people buy tickets in bulk to see the film but not attend, because “an empty theatre sends a message.”

Comments on the site suggest most people find the argument in support of protesting Avatar to be weak.

“This is the dumbest thing I've ever read,” one commenter writes. “I'm all about being equal and breaking down the lines between the straight & LGBT community but seriously? You mean to tell me that you actually wanna start going after EVERY SINGLE MOVIE in hollywood from here on out that doesn't have some sort of LGBT relationship in it for that sole reason alone?”

The site's creator, who is described on the blog as a young transgender person living in the Bay Area, counters by saying going after Avatar will send a message to Hollywood because it is likely to be the top grossing film of the year.

Interestingly, the language of the Na’vi, the fictional race of people portrayed in Avatar, was created by University of Southern California linguistics professor Paul Frommer, who himself is gay.

Avatar opens Friday and is reportedly the most expensive movie ever made. It is Cameron’s first film as director since Titanic.

    -------------------------

I'm a straight supporter of equal rights for all sexual identities, however, I'm finding this extremely ridiculous. I feel sorry for James Cameron, who spent 14 years writing, and after $500 million dollars has been sunk into this project, thinks everything is okay. He wakes up one morning, thinks its go time, is all right and nervous yet happy...

and then sees after all the blood sweat and tears, someone is calling to boycott because he dared make the main characters hetero.

    Poor man.

Does anyone agree with the blogger? I'd like to hear more thoughts.
